Block Time Out In Your Calendar
The first step on how to eliminate digital distractions is to block out time for your most important tasks in your calendar. As business owners, we have a lot going on, but we can’t do everything. I recommend using The Big 3 system which comes from ‘Free To Focus.’ In this great book, author Michael Hyatt talks about identifying the 3 most high-value tasks that will move you forward. These are the most important things that you need to get done. I advocate that you have a Big 3 for your month, week and day. Put your Big 3 tasks in your calendar and make sure you guard that block of time.
Put All Your Devices In ‘Do Not Disturb’ Mode
It’s amazing to me how many professionals sit down to do their work and are constantly being distracted by their pinging phone or incoming email. Why do this? Put your phone, laptop and other devices in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode. If you’re an iPhone user, then go to Settings then scroll down till you find the ‘Do Not Disturb’ button.

By putting your devices in ‘Do Not Disturb’ you are creating a distraction-free environment to focus on your Big 3. Remember that the distractions are mostly notifications (texts, emails, social media). If we want to eliminate distractions, then we need to tackle the notifications. This will require practice and commitment. At first, you may be tempted to pick up your phone or check your email inbox. But you must persevere.
I will admit that the first time I did this, it felt very strange. It was almost sad and a little bit frightening that I wasn’t used to an environment where my phone wasn’t pinging. But after a while, you find that this peace is what is essential for doing deep, focused work.
Put The Phone Far Away
For some, the ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode is not enough. In this scenario, I would suggest putting your phone in another room entirely – and I’d try to put it far away! Put your phone on the other side of the office or house. Make it harder for yourself to access it. There’s no shame in doing this. It’s more about being honest with yourself and your self-discipline. If you’re lacking in discipline, then work with it, not against it. If that still doesn’t work, then give your phone to a colleague and tell them not to give you your phone back until a certain time. If you work at home alone, then put your phone in your car or the garage. Just put it somewhere as far away as possible.
