Recall A Time When You SMASHED IT!
If you’re lacking in confidence, then a very simple way to increase it is to recall a time where you were successful. This could be anything from a project that you did really well, getting a 5 star review, closing a sales deal etc.
When you recall this time, pay particular attention to the emotions you felt at that time. Most likely you were on cloud nine and like you were unstoppable. Focus on those emotions. By doing so, you will naturally begin to feel positive and your confidence will build.
Notice that the trick here is not to just recall the memory. You have to remember the emotions you felt at the time. Emotions strengthen the recall. A memory without emotion is mot going to do much for you. If you make a dedicated effort to hone in on the emotions you felt, you’ll notice a few things happening:
- Your mood will improve
- Your physiology will be better
- You’ll smile
These are just a few ways you can tell that you’ve recalled the emotions effectively. Whenever I do this exercise, I close my eyes and pretend I’m watching the memory on a big TV screen – like a movie. I’ll even imagine some music playing in the background if I need to – whatever it takes for me to feel the full effect of the memory.
[EXERCISE] Recall The Emotions
Go somewhere quiet, put the phone away and sit in silence. Close your eyes and remember the event in vivid detail. The more detail the better. Where were you? What were you wearing? Was it day or night? Were you stood up or sat down? Who else was there?
Now here’s the juicy part.
How did you feel? Don’t say something generic like, “good.” Be specific. Did you feel like you overcame? Proved people wrong? Did you feel your world opened up? Be as detailed as possible. Keep your eyes closed and focus on those emotions. Stay there a while if you want.
Now open your eyes.
How do you feel?
Confident, right?
Repeat this exercise as many times as you need to build your confidence.
